Research summary
The current study is part of the EMPOWER (Enabling, Motivating, people with Personality Disorders in Occupation, Wellbeing, Education and Responsibility)programme grant funded by the National Institute of Health Research. The aim of this research programme is to further develop and evaluate a new intervention based on Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, which aims to increase employment and wellbeing for individuals with a personality disorder (PD). There are five work-packages (WP) which make up the entire research programme: WP1) Understanding of the specific challenges which face individuals with a PD in obtaining and retaining employment; WP2)Developing and evaluating a Preparedness for Employment Scale for individuals with PD; WP3)Conducting a feasibility study to evaluate the intervention; WP4)Conducting a randomised controlled trial and evaluating the cost-effectiveness of the intervention; WP5)Developing an implementation plan to dissemination of the intervention. This protocol details the processes involved in work-packages one and two.
The primary aim of this research is to develop a questionnaire (Preparedness for Employment Scale for Personality Disorder: PES-PD) which will assess employment-seeking behaviours in people with PD. This scale is expected to be helpful in the planning of support for individuals considering employment, and for measuring the outcome of treatments designed to facilitate return to employment across mental health and non-NHS providers. It is important this scale identifies for individuals current challenges of seeking, obtaining and/or retaining employment and highlight any potential difficulties they may face to better prepare them and support them in their return to work.
Focus groups, semi-structured interviews and a pilot study of the developed questionnaire will be conducted to consider acceptability of PES-PD in measuring different stages of seeking, obtaining and retaining employment.Six focus groups of 12 participants will be recruited (PDX2, cliniciansX2, family membersX1, employerX1).
The scale will be piloted on 70 PD clients, 50 members of the public and 30 staff.
