  • Research summary

Patient decision aids are a tool for facilitating shared decision making between patient and clinician. In situations where there is no clear medical evidence of the best treatment, individual values and preferences help to inform the final decision. Patient decision aids function by providing all the information needed for decision making between patient and clinician.

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has developed patient decision aids for Urogynaecological issues including uterine prolapse, stress urinary incontinence and vault prolapse which are increasingly incorporated into routine clinical practice. However, at this time there are no similarly available patient decision aids based on NICE guidance for women experiencing overactive bladder.

A multi-disciplinary steering group comprised of Urogynaecology specialist consultants, urogynaecology specialist nurses, patients and members of the Trust management board will be assembled and individual views and preferences as to decisional needs collated. An initial draft of the patient decision aid will be collated, based on NICE guidelines and incorporating initial discussions from the steering group.

The first draft will then undergo alpha testing with both patients and clinicians to assess for comprehensibility, usability and acceptability. A second draft will then undergo beta testing and qualitative analysis with a select number of patients and clinicians in the field. Quantitative analysis of Ottawa Decision Conflict Scales will inform utility.

10 patients and the clinicians involved in the beta testing will undergo interviews assessing their opinions and the feasibility of use of the document. The researcher will undertake thematic analysis of the interviews to inform the development of the final draft which will be finalised by the steering committee prior to distribution.
