Research summary
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a slow-growing skin tumour which usually affects white skin with local tissue invasion and destruction. These tumours are most common on the head and neck, though different types of BCC are more common in different areas of the body. BCC is the most common cancer in the developed world, affecting primarily the older generations but still with a very good prognosis. In my project I will be concentrating on the different treatment options for BCC and how they are presented to patients. I will produce two options grids, which will summarize the patients treatment options for their BCC on a single piece of paper, which I hope will allow them to better understand the different options and give them more of an active role in deciding their treatment, by understanding the positives and negatives of each treatment. I will test the effectiveness of the options grid by giving participants in the study a questionnaire to find out how they well they felt their treatment options had been presented, with some given the options grid and some not. From the data collected from these questionnaires I will analyse whether the options grid is an effective way to present treatment options, and results in patients being better informed and more satisfied with their treatment
