Research summary
Oral and oropharyngeal cancer incidence rates in the UK have risen by a third in the last three decades. Treatments and outcomes vary. Treatment pathways can produce significant side-effects and consequently impact the individual’s quality of life. Surgery remains the mainstay for the management of oral cavity tumours, with guidelines advocating that tumour resection should be performed with a clinical clearance of 1 cm. Oral cavity cancers are classified into the following subsites: buccal mucosa, upper alveolus, lower alveolus, hard palate, tongue and floor of mouth. The impact of surgery on oral function varies hugely depending on the subsite and proportion of the oral cavity being resected, and consequently effects social, work and personal relationships, which influences post-treatment quality of life. The aim of this research is therefore to develop an accessible online resource containing narratives of peoples’ lives before and after treatment for oral cancer. This online resource with patient experience narratives filmed, will provide those patients diagnosed in the future and their families with accurate, patient-centred information and support, to aid decision-making, informed consent and preparedness for the impact of surgery to subsites within the oral cavity.
