Research summary
Uveal melanoma is a very rare type of adult eye cancer. In approximately 50% of individuals suffering from this cancer it will eventually spread to the liver, which is fatal. There are currently no effective treatments once the cancer has spread to the liver. To have a better understanding of and to be able to treat this, disease models are required that mimic the cancer. In this study we will use primary uveal melanoma cells isolated from patient tumour specimens to reflect the known molecular and clinical diversity. The aim will be to use these cells to develop in vitro and in vivo pre-clinical models, which reproduce aspects of the patient tumour and its microenvironment and that can be further used test new drugs and explore tumour biology.
