  • Research summary

Schizophrenia is characterised by ’positive symptoms’ (such as hallucinations and delusions) and ’negative symptoms’ (including low motivation, social withdrawal and lack of emotional responsiveness). Whereas positive symptoms are easily recognised, there is a lack of objective measures for negative symptoms - even though these aspects of the illness greatly impede patients’ everyday functioning. \n\nIn this study we will develop an objective measure of ’blunted affect’ (a common negative symptom of schizophrenia) using a computerised program which measures facial expressions. We will test this in a group of patients with schizophrenia.
