Research summary
An unhealthy lifestyle and its associated weight gain is the biggest risk factor for pre-diabetes and Type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Targeting weight loss through improvements in diet and physical activity reduces the risk of diabetes. Weight loss leading to a reduction of fat around organs such as the liver is key, however maintaining weight loss is difficult and requires support and education. Combining dietary change and physical activity, we have developed an internet/mobile phone service which includes education and coaching to help maintain weight loss. \nThose with pre-diabetes and T2DM (aged 18-75 years) will undergo a 3 month weight loss phase (diet + physical activity), then a 6 month weight maintenance phase, using the mobile phone service. During the weight loss phase participants will be asked to loose around 6% of their body weight by following a diet plan. Then during the 6 month weight maintenance phase participants will be asked to maintain this weight loss. 1x20min and 8x10min coaching sessions will be offered to participants throughout the programme. Participants will be asked to attend 4 visits to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, to measure how well their body is responding to these lifestyle changes, and whether using this service helps to maintain weight loss over a longer period. During these visits we will measure a number of things including how well blood glucose, body fat and fitness responds to the intervention over the total 9 month period.\nParticipants will be invited to join a focus group and up to 18 individual interviews will be undertaken throughout. This second part of the study will be initiated later during the programme, once recruitment is underway. The interview/topic guides are currently being developed and will be ready to use 6 months after the first recruit to the study.\n
