Research summary
The purpose of this study is to use the experiences of patients and staff on a short stay ward to develop a patient information pack. This would be given to future patients pre-admission. The patient group are those undergoing tests and investigations to clarify a diagnosis of interstitial lung disease (ILD). Little is known about the impact of pre-admission information in this group of patients. Drawing on evidence from the literature in the fields of surgery and oncology it is hoped that providing patient information prior to admission will improve the patient experience and help to alleviate anxiety. Patients aged over the age of 18 with a diagnosis of definite or probable ILD who have not attended as an inpatient on the short stay ward prior to their admission for investigations will be invited to participate. Patients must be able to read and understand all written information relevant to their participation in the study. The study will take place at a specialist unit in England. The study will last six months and participants will be interviewed on one occasion and be asked to complete questionnaires measuring health status and levels of anxiety and depression. This will help us to understand the experiences of the patient group more clearly. In addition to patient interviews nursing and medical staff will also be interviewed. Clinical information relating to the participants disease severity and demographic information will also be collected.
