Research summary
Ethnic disparities in the management of cancer-related pain have been reported globally. Many patients from ethnic minority groups experience unmet cancer pain management needs and are concerned about tolerance, side effects, and addiction during their pain management. The United Kingdom (UK) has become significantly more ethnically diverse in the past decade. However, patient-centred solutions to the effective management of cancer pain in the UK have not been researched among those from ethnic minority communities. This study aims to develop an education intervention for management of cancer pain in ethnic minorities in Britain. Developing such an intervention requires in-depth understanding of the barriers to cancer pain management in ethnic minority communities. It also requires understanding of the experiences and preferences of patients from ethnic minorities about the existing educational resources. This qualitative study will explore the perspective of patients and families from ethnic minorities and the health professionals caring for them on management of cancer-related pain. In-depth interviews will be conducted with patients and their carers, and an adapted grounded theory data analysis technique used for data analysis. These results will be used for development of an education intervention for management of cancer-related pain in ethnic minorities.
