Research summary
Orthognathic treatment is a combination of orthodontic repositioning of teeth followed by surgical repositioning of the jaws to correct skeletal and jaw discrepancies.
Several studies have shown that pre-operative information and counselling needs to be improved in relation to orthognathic surgery and when this is inadequate the patient is more emotionally unprepared and as result dissatisfied with the surgery.
The aim of this research project is to investigate prospective, current and post operative orthognathic patients’ understanding of the surgery and orthodontics involved in orthognathic treatment. This will lead to the second aim of creating a patient focused web based resource to be used for future patients considering orthognathic surgery. This will then be reviewed via a questionnaire and tested for its quality, ease of use and accessibility. There is potential the web based resource could be then tailored to be used on the Bristol Dental Hospital patient information website.
In order to evaluate patients information needs relating to orthognathic treatment participating patients will be asked to attend one of four focus groups i) prospective treatment ii) current orthodontic patients approaching surgery iii) 3 months post surgery ie. before the orthodontic appliance is removed. Iv) post treatment.
Patients will be aged from 16-25 years and recruited from those seen on the Orthognathic Clinics at the Bristol Dental Hospital and Royal United Hospital Bath. Participation is voluntary and at any time patients can decline or leave the study. It will take place at the Bristol University Dental Hospital over the course of the next two and half years.REC name
