Research summary
A patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) is a series of questions that patients are asked in order to gauge their perceptions of their health. The main aim of this project is to develop a new PROM for cardiovascular disease that will be evaluated with individuals attending a cardiac rehabilitation programme.
A literature review of PROMs currently used within cardiology will be undertaken. Examining the tools' strengths and weaknesses, and highlighting the aspects of health that they measure will provide an initial focus for developing this new PROM, by guiding data that we collect from cardiology staff and patients.
In discussion ('focus') groups, staff and patients will separately discuss and provide ideas for the general content of the PROM. Within staff focus groups, attendees will provide representation from a range of different professions; within patient focus groups, attendees will provide representation from a range of different cardiac diagnoses. Each focus group will consist of 6-12 individuals, and a minimum of two of each type of focus group will be held. Groups will be held until there is saturation of data - i.e. no new information is unearthed by discussion.
It is anticipated that focus group data will indicate areas around the PROM's content that require exploration in greater depth. These areas will provide the topics for an interview schedule to be used in 1:1 interviews. Again interviews will be conducted with both staff and patients, and will be held until there is saturation of data.
All of this data will be used to form the overall content of the PROM, and the questions it asks. The tool will be checked for literacy / plain English and translatability by NHS Ayrshire and Arran’s Communications department, and final revisions will be made – resulting in a first draft of the PROM (PROM-CR1) to be tested within a cardiac rehabilitation population.
