Research summary
This study will investigate the behaviour and beliefs (understanding) that chronic pain patients hold around the self-management of their chronic pain, including self-efficacy to manage chronic pain and the barriers and facilitators to effective self-management of chronic pain. The study will focus on the consultation between chronic pain patients and their health professionals to investigate communication, expectations regarding treatment, satisfaction and perceived effectiveness of the consultation from both patient and health professionals' perspectives. Patients will be aged eighteen and over and been diagnosed with either fibromyalgia / chronic widespread pain, long standing back pain (mechanical back pain) or widespread arthritis, for six months or longer. These patients and health professionals will be recruited from pain clinics within Cwm Taf and Cardiff and Vale Health Boards and must meet all inclusion criteria to participate in the study. The information above will be collected through the use of questionnaires and interviews. This study will be the starting point of developing a consultation aid in order to improve communication between chronic pain patients and health professionals with the aim of improving patient self-management of chronic pain.
