  • Research summary

Patient decision aids are a tool for shared decision making between patients and clinicians. They function by providing all the information required to facilitate shared decision making and aid in establishing the most important aspects relating to treatment for that individual patient.
This project will aim to provide a validated patient decision aid, based on NICE (National Institute for Care and Excellence) guidelines that are in use in clinical practice throughout the UK. The first step is to create a multidisciplinary steering committee consisting of clinicians, specialist nurses and expert patients. Initial clinician focus groups will aim to establish a consensus on the information that needs to be incorporated in the decision aid with an emphasis on current NICE guidelines.
Initial patient focus group will be created consisting of 5 expert patients through the Women’s Network to form the Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) panel. During these focus groups, the preferred mode of delivery and format will be established which is initially anticipated to be a paper leaflet delivered in the outpatient setting.
The first draft will then undergo alpha testing with both patients and clinicians to assess for comprehensibility, usability and acceptability.
A second draft will then undergo beta testing and qualitative analysis with a select number of patients and clinicians in the field. Quantitative analysis of Ottawa Decision Conflict Scales will inform utility.
30 patients and 10 clinicians involved in the beta testing will undergo interviews assessing their opinions and feasibility of use. The researcher will undertake thematic analysis of the interviews to develop the final draft which will be finalised by the steering committee. This will be sent to NICE and British Society of Urogynaecology(BSUG) management committee for approval.
The study will be undertaken at Sheffield and South Tees NHS Trust and has been awarded a grant by the BSUG committee.
