Research summary
Patients attending audiology services report wanting more information and support about hearing aids and hearing loss than they received; they report receiving little or no information about assistive listening devices or addditional support services.
Shared decision making (SDM) is a process in which patients and clinicians share information and plan clinical care together based on evidence and patient preference. Decision aids are tools to support SDM. They present information to patients (e.g. in a pamphlet) on the range of options available giving answers to the most frequently asked questions around options and their implications. The use of SDM and decision tools in clinical practice is promoted within the NHS and is seen as a marker of clinical quality.
This study aims to develop a patient decision aid for people with hearing loss. We will work with international researchers in SDM and will interview and observe in clinic audiologists and patients with hearing loss to understand their decisional needs. We will use this information to develop a decision aid for hearing loss which will be made freely available.
This research has the potential to address the information needs of patients with hearing loss and improve patient involvement in their hearing healthcare.
