Research summary
Liver and pancreas cancers generally have a poor clinical outcome. However, their clinical behaviour is heterogenous regarding treatment response. Some tumours respond well to chemotherapy whilst others do not. Likewise, some can be cured by surgical resection, whilst others recur incurably despite resection. To understand more about this heterogeneity through experimental research we need access to tissue samples from patients who have undergone surgical resection. These can then be analysed through several different scientific approaches which aim to profile tumour biology and relate it to clinical outcomes (survival, recurrence, radiological response to therapy).
Here we request ethical approval to obtain liver and pancreas cancer samples from patients who have
already undergone surgical resection, as well as those who are due to undergo resection (described below as retrospective and prospective cohorts respectively).Patients are those treated within the Oxford Centre for Hepatobiliary Surgery and we plan to link pathological specimens to an existing clinical database within the department, allowing us to link clinical attributes to cancer biology. Sample analysis will involve a range of techniques including cell line generation, cutting-edge imaging technology and genetic sequencing.
