  • Research summary

This research will work with the County Durham Youth Offending Service (YOS) and their Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) to identify/develop, implement and evaluate an evidenced based service model which can positively impact upon young people with identified speech, language and communication difficulties who offend. It will:
Provide an evidence base for the inclusion of speech, language and communication services for young people with identified needs, connected to the criminal justice system – literature review and synthesis of evidence
Identify what a model might look like and how it can be effectively ‘rolled out’ to other YOS’s
Test the impact of the model, including:
What does an effective YOS with speech and language provision model look like and how/why does it make a difference - what ‘context’ has the ‘mechanism’ overcome, with what impact?
Can the coordinated provision of speech and language services within the YOS have a significant positive impact on young people’s future behaviours?
Can the development of a comprehensive pathway for accessing speech and language therapies and equipping YOS staff with increased knowledge of speech and language difficulties impact positively on young people?
