  • Research summary

In order to develop a better understanding of the issues and concerns affecting people with personality disorders in obtaining and retaining employment, we are developing a scale which will capture their readiness/preparedness to enter employment. The scale will address the emotional, cognitive, and behavioural obstacles to entering employment. This scale will be used both for treatment planning for individuals who have not yet commenced seeking employment, and also as an outcome measure for those who enter an employment and mental health intervention (e.g. Richmond Fellowship, MIND). It is important this scale identify for individuals current challenges of seeking, obtaining and/or retaining employment and highlight any potential difficulties they may face to better prepare them and support them in their return to work.
Focus groups, semi-structured interviews, a pilot study and psychometric testing of the questionnaires will be conducted to consider acceptability of PES-PD and its validity and reliability in measuring these different stages of seeking, obtaining and retaining employment.
Six focus groups of 12 participants will be recruited (PD X 2, clinicians X 2, family members X1, employersX1). The scale will be piloted on 50 members of the public and 50 individuals with PD and 30 staff members. Formal psychometric evaluation of the PES-PD will be conducted using data from 1000 individuals with PD (recruited nationally through the network of PD services and PD support groups) for preliminary identification of means and standard deviations, internal consistency, and factor structure. The PES-PD and other set of measures will be accessed via a website. Participants will be able to complete them in 40-50 minutes. Consent will be sought from all participants by completing a consent form online.

Recruitment exclusion criteria excludes those who lack capacity.
