Research summary
Young people reporting self-harm is a major public health concern and access to services is often difficult. Digital interventions, such as those delivered by an app or on a website, are one approach that could increase the support available. At the moment, there is no digital intervention available that uses solution-focused therapy to support people's mental health. The overall aim of this study is to find out what is important to consider when developing a digital intervention, delivered by text message, based on solution-focused therapy for young people who self-harm. This will be achieved in two ways. First, focus groups will be conducted with young people with experience of self-harm, and with clinicians with experience of both solution-focused therapy and working with young people who self-harm, to understand their views of a text message intervention based on solution-focused therapy. We are interested in their views of whether an intervention delivered by text message is acceptable, what would encourage engagement with the intervention, what would be a barrier to using the intervention, and what features would be most important to be included in the text messages. Second, video/audio recordings of solution-focused therapy sessions with young people will be analysed to identify key components of the clinical interaction that should be incorporated into the digital intervention, where possible.
