Research summary
This research aims to explore how digital health systems in Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) can be used to indicate how safe the use of insulin is, both for individuals and across the whole ICS. It will explore how this can be measured in real time and how current results can be compared with previous results to show whether there has been an improvement. To do this, it is important to understand the experiences of people who use insulin and have had a hospital stay. Their positive experiences, their problems, and any ideas they have for improving these processes will be analysed. The experiences of the healthcare staff who were involved in these people’s care, their problems, and their ideas for improvement will also be collected. Observation of activities involving insulin in healthcare settings will be performed to understand how these are done in real-life situations where there are inevitable interuptions and other challenges.
All of this information will be used to create a detailed picture of insulin use when people move between hospital and home, including what goes well, where problems can occur, and where improvements can be made. The possible use of digital health systems to manage insulin use more accurately and to provide warnings before an incident occurs will then be explored with digital teams in the ICS. Possible measures that can provide an indication of safety for insulin use will be considered and recommended.
