  • Research summary

Developing lung cancer screening in Hodgkin lymphoma survivors
    Background:
Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is a cancer of the lymphoid system. Most teenagers and young adults are cured with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or both. Survivors are at risk of developing lung cancer due to their treatment- a leading cause of death from second cancer in survivors. Lung cancer screening (LCS) in smokers saves lives by detecting lung cancer at an early stage. HL survivors will not benefit from the LCS programme in England because they develop lung cancer at a younger age and the eligibility criteria do not account for their unique risk factors.
    Rationale:
There is a clinical need to develop a LCS programme for HL survivors, however the willingness of survivors to be screened and the barriers to undergoing screening have not been investigated.
    Design
In this single site study sponsored by The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, we will approach HL survivors to investigate the psychosocial predictors of willingness to be screened using a questionnaire survey. Participants will be recruited from the Teenage and Young Adult cancer survivor database held at the Centre for Childhood Cancer Survivor Studies (CCCSS) at the University of Birmingham via a linked protocol. Participants will have survived HL for more than 5 years, be aged 18 or over and will not have a diagnosis of lung cancer currently or previously. The study findings will inform methods and materials used in a future LCS pilot study.
