Research summary
People diagnosed with diabetes are at risk of developing a foot ulcer. A foot ulcer can increase the risk of infection to the foot. Developing an infection in the foot can lead in some cases to a foot amputation. Foot amputations have increased in the UK due to diabetes. These amputations can be prevented with better information on prevention.Education for people with diabetes is important. There has been a lack of education developed for people with diabetes on how to prevent a foot ulcer.
This study is looking to recruit diabetic patients from the community in Rochdale that are registered with the podiatry department.
This will be a 2 phase study that will take place at Nye Bevan health centre in Rochdale. The 1st phase will consist of patient focus groups to gain patients’ views and experiences of any previous education they may have received to prevent foot ulcers. These will last approximately 60 minutes. The 2nd phase of the study will be a 60–90-minute workshop. This will include diabetes specialist podiatrists and the diabetic patients working together to develop education for people with diabetes in order to prevent a foot ulcer.
