  • Research summary

For patients with cancer, delayed diagnosis can have a huge impact on treatment options and outcomes. The importance of clear communication about symptom severity and persistence and the role patients play in the follow-up and review of symptoms may be critical for early recognition and treatment.

This study builds upon findings from our systematic review and previous research with patients and stakeholders in West Yorkshire exploring possible interventions in which patients assist in achieving a faster cancer diagnosis in primary care. This has indicated that an intervention taking the form of a ‘safety-netting prescription’ which can be chosen to be adopted by a GP at the end of a primary care consultation may assist the timely follow-up and review of patients with potential cancer symptoms.

Currently we do not know the precise content and format of the intervention, whether it would be acceptable to all stakeholders and could work in practice. We have undertaken intervention development work through previous RCF work and we are now seeking to further refine the intervention in three stakeholder engagement and design workshops. The study we are applying for here is to use a mock-up of the intervention drawn from the workshops to further develop the intervention prototype through focus groups with patients and primary care staff to assess perceptions, response and feasibility in practice. This will allow intervention development through a cycle of interlinked stakeholder input and feedback until a prototype is agreed for a larger scale trial.
