Research summary
There is strong evidence for the benefits of physical activity during and after cancer treatment. Physical activity can improve physical function, body composition, perceived wellbeing and quality of life, and can reduce side effects of treatment such as fatigue. An independent cancer taskforce for NHS England has recommended that physical activity is embedded into cancer care as part of a holistic package of care and support.
This research will take a qualitative approach to explore how best to offer physical activity support and advice in one NHS acute trust (Barnsley Hospital). Researchers from Sheffield Hallam University will work with patients and healthcare professionals in cancer services in Barnsley to develop a blueprint for a service that promotes physical activity throughout the cancer journey.
The research will involve a contextual inquiry, where researchers observe current cancer care clinics and ask questions in context to understand where the opportunities exist for promoting physical activity. Patients and cancer care professionals will also be invited to attend co-design workshops, to engage in group discussions and to develop ideas for promoting physical activity that can be piloted in subsequent research.
