  • Research summary

Current work by the applicants have identified the protective effects of nostalgic memories in people with dementia. When asked to recall a nostalgic memory, people with dementia are able to process and recall more about their condition, a vital component in the therapy process. With existing reminiscence therapies (RTs), people are asked to bring to mind events in their lives, but the types of memories recalled are not specified. Evidence of efficacy of current RTs is contradictory. We argue that nostalgia is the active component behind any positive effect of RT, and that existing RTs need to be adapted to promote nostalgic reminiscence. The overall outcome will be the development of a Nostalgia-Based Reminiscence Therapy (NBRT) to enhance the existing RT approach.
