  • Research summary

Adult patients with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) often
have co-morbid depression. Up to 12 % of people with diabetes have symptoms
of depression meeting the criteria for a depressive disorder (ICD10). This often
results in suboptimal blood glucose control. Many people with depression in
diabetes do not have access to any psychological therapies.
This is a Phase 1 study prior to an intervention trial. Participants who are living
with diabetes will be invited to complete the PHQ-9 screening questionnaire
which will identify those who have clinical depression. It is expected that 20% of
people will respond to the questionnaire.
Participants will also be asked to complete on line the WHOQOL-BREF quality of life
questionnaire, Diabetes Distress Scale (DDS), The Depression in Diabetes Questionnaire and EQ5D5L self-rated health
questionnaire (the scores on this relate to health economic outcomes).
    Expected Outcome
We will be able to make an estimate of the percentage of people with clinical
depression and also the degree of diabetes distress manifest in people with
T1DM and T2DM. The analysis of the EQ5D5L questionnaire responses will
inform a future study in relation to the distribution of scores and how patient
symptoms may relate to health economic outcomes, for future interventions.
Participants will also be asked to provide their hospital or NHS number to enable us to confirm information re their metabolic control and other health issues.
