  • Research summary

Degenerative aortic stenosis ((AS) narrowing of the main outlet valve of the heart due to age-related 'wear-and-tear') is increasingly common as our population ages. Treatment options are now available for patients previously deemed to old for interventions, which work best if applied before the heart has been weakened by the narrowed valve. We want to understand how frequent is AS in people aged 75years and above in the community so we propose to organise a 'screening' ultrasound scan in 100 consecutive willing subjects attending a GP surgery in the Swansea Bay Network area for non-cardiac reasons.
