Research summary
Information that the health services collect shows that people living in areas where life is harder get their cancer diagnosed later. That means they're more likely to die.
Symptoms of bowel cancer include diarrhoea and blood in your poo. If you have these then you're
supposed to go to your GP. They would give you a poo test that can tell you if you may have cancer. The trouble is that people in these areas often don't have enough GPs. This may mean that bowel cancer is detected later. However, there are more pharmacies in these areas than in other areas. We want to work with people from these areas, GPs, and pharmacists to design a service where people can be seen in pharmacies, and be offered this poo test. To develop such a service we first need to check it works. We need to run a special type of healthcare research (also called a trial). The trial will compare areas which have the service to those that don't. We hope to increase the number of poo tests that are given out to people with symptoms of bowel cancer. That will lead to earlier diagnoses and save lives.
