  • Research summary

During open heart surgery, it is necessary to stop the heart temporarily, whilst on a heart-lung machine, which may cause damage to the heart muscle. This study aims to make heart surgery in children safer by improving the way in which we protect the heart from damage. We will compare two types of cardioplegia, the fluid which is used to stop and protect the heart during surgery. del Nido cardioplegia is the most common type used in the United States and was designed specifically for children. St. Thomas’ cardioplegia was primarily designed for adults but is also used in most centres in the UK for children. We will determine whether children of all ages recover faster and with fewer complications with one of these solutions and therefore which cardioplegia offers the best protection for the heart during surgery.
