Research summary
Occupational asthma caused by sensitisation to acrylic compounds (acrylic acid, methacrylates, cyanoacrylates, acrylic co-polymers) has been described in case reports and a small number of case series. The pathophysiology of acrylic-related asthma is largely unknown, although it may involve an immunological mechanism. We wish to describe the characteristics of workers with occupational asthma caused by acrylic compounds, who have been notified to the UK HSE Surveillance of work-related respiratory diseases (SWORD) scheme between 1989 and 2015, in order to provide insight into the mechanisms of this disease.
