  • Research summary

Due to the advanced age of mesothelioma patients and often advanced stage at time of diagnosis, many patients are often too frail for treatment with chemotherapy. While awaiting further results from ongoing clinical trials that include wider populations, evidence from retrospective population-based studies can be helpful. As far as we are aware no study has utilised the UK Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) dataset and cancer registry data to explore the number of patients diagnosed with mesothelioma and prescribing trends in the UK. In particular, exploring the proportion of patients with confirmed histology and subtype in a real world data setting and the proportion of patients receiving treatment with chemotherapy and whether this is similar to data from clinical trials is important to help define current practice in the context of emerging treatment options. \n\nThis is a population based cohort study using data from the National Cancer registry datasets. We aim to look at the demographics and clinical characteristics of patients diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma from October 2012 till October 2016. We plan to assess gender, fitness levels, and subtypes of mesothelioma if available. We also aim to look at numbers of patients receiving chemotherapy, how long for and the approximate survival times. This will act as a real world audit on the current management of malignant pleural mesothelioma within England.
