Research summary
Vitamin D is produced in the skin following exposure to sunlight and is the main source with a small amount obtained through diet. We are currently using computer modelling of the UK climate and data from our previous human studies to determine how much sunlight exposure is required to achieve and maintain adequate year-round levels vitamin D in 'at risk' population groups in the UK. This includes those with pigmented skin (which reduces sunlight penetration), whose cultural habits (i.e. clothing) reduce skin exposure, and those medically advised to avoid sun exposure (e.g. photosensitive and skin cancer patients). As part of this work, we are undertaking a qualitative study involving a series of focus groups with members of local communities to discuss knowledge and attitudes to vitamin D and sunlight exposure/protection practices. We now plan to extend this to include photosensitive and skin cancer patients in order to address their specific needs. Our findings will inform Department of Health recommendations on vitamin D acquisition and sunlight exposure.
