Research summary
In this project we aim to use new imaging techniques that can show greater detail of structures in the brain, particularly a large area known as the cortex, in order to better help us reach some of these answers. Better understanding of these changes will aid in our understanding of the mechanisms and processes that give rise to Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD), allow for more individualised treatment, reduce the uncertainty of outcomes, as well as aid the development of new disease-modifying therapies aimed at repair in AD and PD.
The study will involve a visit to Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC) for clinical assessment and an MRI scanning session. During this visit we will ask some questions about the participant’s medical background and health, we will perform a videotaped clinical examination and undertake cognitive assessments and questionnaires.
Following the clinical assessment, on the same day, participants will undergo two brain MRI scans. During the MRI scans we will acquire several different pictures of the brain at rest. We will then compare the results of the MRIs with the findings from the clinical assessment. This will allow us to make links between how brain areas function in real life, and how they appear on imaging.
The study is looking to recruit 30 participants with Alzheimer's disease, 30 participants with Parkinson's disease and 30 healthy controlsREC name
