Data collection arrangements
The University of Birmingham’s School of Dentistry Research Tissue Bank has been set up to collect and store specific research samples from adult and paediatric patients attending Birmingham Dental Hospital and members of the public (healthy donors).
The Dentistry Research and teaching biorepository (DRTB) provides a patient Information leaflet to all donors. Where verbal consent is received, a note is made in the patient record and where written consent is received, Informed Consent Form for patients to review and sign.
Waste teeth pots are provided to relevant clinic and are collected on demand or on a routine collection day, whichever is the sooner.
Tissue collection and specialist collections can be made directly with the laboratory team. Cold storage points at 4 and -20 degrees are set up within on clinic research areas of the hospital. When tissue is deposited routinely, regular collections can be arranged, else they must be made directly with the laboratory team. Finally, samples can be received at the lab door, if the correct documentation accompanies the donation. No samples will be accepted into the laboratory without clinician confirmation of valid consent.
Where data is also collected, this will be done directly into the electronic systems. Where the e-systems are employed the sample must be accompanied by the verification slip, to state that all relevant data has been inputted. This is the responsibility of the PR and the supporting clinical team.Research programme
Samples and associated data from the Dentistry Research and Teaching Biorepository (DRTB) 2019 – 2024 will be used by researchers and trainees from the University of Birmingham and in collaboration with commercial and non-commercial partners to investigate the mechanisms of oral disease. Our research programmes encompass a wide variety of scientific disciplines including Public Health and Epidemiology, Tissue Injury & Regeneration, and Biomaterials. A particular research focus is inflammatory conditions that affect the mouth and its association to whole body (systemic) health. The ultimate purpose of biorepository projects will be to contribute to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to help people with diseases with a focus on those diseases affecting the oral region. Our teaching programmes include Dentistry, Microbiology and Biomaterials. Furthermore, there is a strong presence of PhD research undertaken with a multidisciplinary approach, bridging both teaching and research. The use of human teeth in our teaching programmes has been established for many years, providing a realistic and safe environment to learn. The interface of biomaterials with human tissue within the field of healing and tissue regeneration supports the pathway to personalised medicine. The biorepository provides tissues for training which cannot yet be replicated in laboratory models.
