Research summary
As children become "Looked After" they have a medical carried out by the General Medical Practitioner. As part of this process they are meant to have an oral health assessment. Unfortunately this is usually a cursory examination. As part of this proposed study an experienced dental practitioner would carry out a thorough oral health assessment of each child as they become "Looked After". This assessment would be in line with BASCD(British Asssocation of Community Dentists) criteria and would include age, dmft/DMFT(decayed, missing, filled), postcode and registration with dental services.
These data would then be compared with a normative database to establish if "Looked After" children have a higher prevalence of dental decay.REC name
