Dementia Fundamentals of Care in Acute Settings– Magic Tables for Activity, enGagement & Interactive Connection (DemFoCAS – Magic) will explore the use of portable interactive light projectors “magic Tables” with people living with dementia on East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust acute inpatient wards.
20 – 25% of acute NHS hospital beds are occupied by people living with dementia – who often experience poor outcomes including reduced function and ability to return home independently after a hospital stay. The “magic tables” are designed to increase stimulation, physical activity and social engagement in people living with dementia. Helping people to be more cognitively and physically active during their hospital stay could improve both the experience and longer terms outcomes for people living with dementia.
This case study research design, will use multi methods to collect the data (generating quantitative and qualitative data) – document review, survey questionnaire, usage data, semi structured interviews, focus groups and observations - providing an in depth real-world exploration of the case.
All staff working on the 8 wards across Colchester and Ipswich acute hospitals will be asked to complete the questionnaire survey regarding use of the magic tables. People living with dementia (& their relatives/ carers) who are using the magic table whilst an inpatient on any of these wards, will be asked to allow their session to be observed and to answer some questions after on their thoughts and experience. Staff or Volunteers using the magic tables on these wards with people with dementia will join focus groups to discuss use of the magic tables.
The aims are to explore the utility, practicality and experience of using the magic table with people living with dementia in the acute hospital setting.REC name
