Research summary
The Scottish Government is encouraging the development of digital platforms which integrate established technologies through the Technology Enabled Care (TEC) programme to help people living with dementia, and their caregivers, to overcome some of the many challenges to independence and quality of life. One solution is a Dementia Post Diagnostic Digital Support Platform (DPPDSP)which has been funded in Lothian for one year. This platform is delivered via a computer tablet, and consists of three components: “Living it Up“ a Scottish Government funded online health and wellbeing portal, “Jointly“ which is the Carers UK’s digital app, and “Click Go“ which is software which gives people more control over their support. Although these components may be used individually in an ad hoc fashion by individuals and carers, combining them into a ‘dementia digital platform’ and offering them to individuals and caregivers of those newly diagnosed is novel. It is unknown whether this dementia digital platform will be acceptable to people living with dementia and their carers, or what impact this platform will have on important outcomes such as the length of time between diagnosis of dementia and (1) when outside carers are needed to keep the person in their own home, (2) admission to hospital or, (3) long term care. We are therefore carrying out a feasibility study to address these issues. We will recuit 80 people, newly diagnosed with dementia, and their carers for a study which lasts up to 9 months. All participants will be given the Digital Platform. Most data will concern health care use and will be collected from routinely collected health and social care records. In addition, two questionnaires will be sent to participants and their carers on the use of the digital support platform will be sent two months into the study.
