  • Research summary

The aim of this study is to explore the factors that influence the perioperative care of a patient with dementia from the perspective of the patient, the family members and the healthcare professionals.

The perioperative environment is not optimized for the care of a person with dementia, and often healthcare professionals do not feel confident enough to provide appropriate care. Through semi-structured interviews, healthcare professionals will be able to share their experience about the perioperative care of the patient with dementia in order to explore what strategies work well and what needs to be improved. Patients with dementia who require surgery and their family members will also be interviewed in order to acknowledge their point of view regarding the care that patients receive during the perioperative trajectory, how was their hospital experience and what could healthcare professionals do to ease the process.

Furthermore, as part of the study, data will be collected from the patients notes regarding any issues or complications during the perioperative trajectory, such as incidents or any additional medication given. All this data combine will give an overview of the main challenges that healthcare professionals, patients with dementia and their family members encounter during the perioperative care of the patient with dementia.

This study is part of a PhD project and will last from 2018 to 2021. It is funded byt he Oxford BRC.
