  • Research summary

This project will explore a new way of working with children and young people to support their mental health and wellbeing. Children’s Wellbeing Practitioners (CWPs), or Education Mental Health Practitioners (EMHPs) as they are known in some areas, have started working in schools over the last two years. They were introduced by the Government to help young people experiencing difficulty with anxiety and low mood.
CWPs/EMHPs see young people individually in schools to help them learn different ways to manage their problems. This is a new way of working and at present we don’t know a lot about what people involved think about it.
This project aims to find out what young people and professionals agree on about CWP/EMHP services. It will ask: What is challenging about this way of working? What is helpful about this way of working? Based on this, what improvements could be made?
A Delphi survey will be used to explore these questions. This involves asking people to share their opinions in three stages. First, young people who have seen a CWP/EMHP, CWP/EMHPs themselves, their supervisors, and school link-workers will complete an interview or questionnaire. Their responses will be used to create a questionnaire made up of statements. The same groups of participants will then rate how much they agree or disagree with each statement in the questionnaire. These responses will be used to adjust the questionnaire and show how everyone voted. The final questionnaire will then be completed by everyone again. This process is expected to last several months with gaps between each stage.
Through the Delphi survey it is hoped that we can learn more about how CWPs/EMHPs in schools are being experienced and what the different groups of people involved think is most important in improving this way of working.
