Research summary
Delivery of Supported Self-Management in Asthma Reviews: A Mixed Methods Observational Study of Health Care Professionals, Nested in the IMP2ART Programme of Work.
Asthma results in >6.3 million UK primary care consultations each year. Evidence suggests people with asthma are well placed to manage their condition themselves, and that this is most successful when there is a combination of 1. patient education, 2. professional training and 3. organisational support in place to help. The approach is known as ‘supported self-management’ (SSM). SSM reduces the risk of asthma attacks, improves asthma control and quality of life. The IMP2ART (IMPlementing IMProved Asthma self-management as RouTine) study is an approved research programme which is currently underway. The programme aims to help general practices embed supported self-management into routine asthma care. 144 practices will be recruited across the UK. Recruited practices will be equally divided between the implementation group (receiving the IMP2ART SSM strategies) and control group (standard asthma care).
Nested within the IMP2ART study, this PhD research project aims to observe/video record asthma consultations to assess healthcare professional (HCP) usage of patient-centered and behavioural/motivational strategies to promote asthma self-management. Patient-centered strategies aim to provide care that incorporates individual patient preferences, ensuring patient values guide all clinical decisions, which contribute towards the influence and empowerment of self-management. An observational study will be conducted, including a combination of video recordings of a sample of the IMP2ART general practices asthma consultations (face-to-face, telephone and video consultations), and post recording semi-structured interviews with HCP’s. Participant eligibility includes health care professionals who deliver asthma reviews (nurses or GP’s) recruited within the IMP2ART study.
This work will inform future roll out of the IMP2ART implementation strategy, specifically adding to the evidence that HCPs should be provided with specific training skills to implement a motivating and patient-centered asthma review.
