  • Research summary

The individual management plan - outcome score (IMP-OS) is a newly developed outcome measure, designed to reflect the individual needs and achievement of those needs in patients accessing adult audiology services. As the outcome measure uses individual needs specific to each patient, in its current format, it cannot be used to evaluate wider service level quality and development in Audiology beyond the use of global patient scores. However these scores are not specific enough to determine areas of future service development.

The current study aims to develop categories for the IMP-OS so that individual needs can be grouped. This will allow the IMP-OS to be used for more specific areas of service level evaluation. In order to develop categories, existing patient needs will be analysed using a qualitative analysis approach.

Three focus groups will also be carried out with Audiologists who are currently using the IMP-OS clinically to seek professional opinion on appropriate categories for the outcome measure. These Audiologists will be recruited from the three hospital sites across North Wales and invited to attend a two hour focus group at their normal place of work. The focus groups will aim to determine professional opinion on the optimal categories for IMP-OS and qualitative analysis of the transcripts will be used together with analysis of the patient needs to define appropriate categories.
