Research summary
Stroke is a leading cause of adult disability worldwide. The number of stroke survivors is increasing due to an aging population and lower early post-stroke mortality [Feigin 2019]. Sarcopaenia refers to the loss of muscle mass and function [Cruz-Jentof et al 2010] and is prevalent in approximately 50% of stroke cases [Shiraishi et al 2018]. Stroke related sarcopaenia leads to poorer outcomes such as greater lengths of hospital stay and increased levels of dependence and disability. What is not known is how quickly such muscle changes occur to affected and non-affected limbs following stroke, and what factors are most significantly associated with their developments.
In this observational study, 50 patients suffering ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke will be recruited to have assessments of muscle size and function, mobility, nutrition, and inflammation each week during their hospital admission, and then again at 6 weeks post discharge.
The aim of the study will be to determine how quickly changes in muscle size and function occur after stroke, and which factors (nutrition, inflammation, stroke severity, frailty) are most associated with muscle loss and the development of sarcopaenia after stroke.
