Research summary
The study outlined in this protocol will use qualitative interviews with primary care healthcare professionals and patients, their relatives and/or supporting peers who are involved in the management of patients’ medicines. These interviews will investigate, for the first time in the United Kingdom (U.K.), how deprescribing is communicated and negotiated, and how decisions to deprescribe are made. We will follow a systematic approach to consider patients and healthcare professionals’ views and experiences, as well as perceived barriers and facilitators of deprescribing in the current primary care healthcare system.
Our objectives are:
• To understand how deprescribing is conducted in current primary care practice;
• To identify real-life barriers and enablers of deprescribing;
• To ascertain the best terminology to use for deprescribing;
• To investigate how deprescribing is communicated and negotiated;
• To identify key components required to conduct effective deprescribing consultations;
• To understand how patient involvement in discussions and decisions about their medicines can be elicited during deprescribing consultations;
• To produce a trigger video for use in Experience-based co-design of a process for deprescribing.REC name
