  • Research summary

The DECIDE Education Programme is a short contact continuing professional development (CPD) programme designed and delivered by the University of Manchester and aimed at interdisciplinary community clinicians. The programme integrates educational methodology in clinical reasoning with NHS policies and guidelines to drive improvement in clinical decision-making: a skill fundamental to providing better value health care. The programme provides Healthcare Professionals (HCPs) with opportunities to increase contextual knowledge and change decision-making behaviour to make accurate diagnoses and management decisions. The model underpinning this education is an innovative approach to CPD: providing a tailored population-based approach targeting key time points that influence a patient’s journey during their experience of health care delivery in the UK.

The main objective is to measure the impact of the DECIDE Education programme on clinical practice and patient care. It will involve conducting semi-structured interviews and analysis of the reflective cases in the online portfolios of GPs who attended the DECIDE Education Programme. To capture impact on patient experience and outcomes from consultations with programme participants (clinicians) data from ‘Patient-reported experience measures’ (PREMs) questionnaires will be collected from the participating GP Practices.

Two week wait referrals for suspected skin cancers and the medicine usage and cost from collaborating CCGs will also be analysed to measure the impact of the DECIDE Education Programme on the Health care service.

This research study is funded by the Salford Clinical Commissioning Group and will be conducted in Greater Manchester across the health and social care footprint of the participating Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs): Bury, Bolton, Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale, Manchester, Salford, Trafford and Wigan.
