  • Research summary

Hospital Haemodialysis is a unique delivery of healthcare. Life sustaining treatment is provided within a communal environment 3 times a week for 4 hours at a time. Patients often come to dialysis in transportation together and therefore spend a large percentage of their weekly lives with the “haemodialysis community”.

Death within the haemodialysis community is sadly quite frequent with 14% of patients dying within 12 months of starting renal replacement therapy. The impact of these deaths, especially within the haemodialysis population, has not been explored previously; one reason for this is the sensitivity of the subject for both patient and healthcare providers. However, my patient and public involvement questions have confirmed that patients would be happy to partake in this research study.

This study aims to explore the impact of a death within the haemodialysis community through qualitative research methods using semi-structured interviews lasting about 1 hour. These interviews will be conducted in the Oxford Kidney Unit where possible. This study hopes to recruit approximately 20 patients to allow a rich breadth of experiences to be sampled. The participants will be regular patients who have their haemodialysis at the Oxford Kidney Unit, Churchill Hospital. This study also hopes to guide future planning for the Oxford Kidney Unit on how to acknowledge a death of a haemodialysis patient and its role in supporting the community of haemodialysis patients.
