  • Research summary

A clinical case study examining the effectiveness of using a Dyadic Developmental Practice (DDP) informed intervention with a 15 year old female with an intellectual disability. She is currently accessing the NHS Learning Disability Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service where this research is being conducted.

Currently there is limited published research as to the use of attachment based interventions for children and young people with intellectual disabilities. There is also no published research regarding using DDP with children and young people with an intellectual disability. This research will add to the growing evidence base of using attachment based interventions within an intellectual disability population.

As part of the service we collect outcome measures and these will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the DDP informed intervention with the foster-carer and young person. It is unclear how long the intervention will last for. The young person will attend weekly or fortnightly sessions with her foster carer and complete a short outcome measure of either 4 questions or one depending on her ability at each session (this is standard practice in our service). The foster carer will complete outcome measures at the start and end of the intervention. The teacher will complete a limited number of outcome measures at the start and end of the intervention.
