  • Research summary

This is an exploratory piece of research which seeks to investigate the experience of service users who attended an emotion regulation skills group, which has included the use of service user generated photographs. Photographs were used to augment homework tasks (which are designed to facilitate skills development) as a method of recording and feedback. We propose to gather information through semi-structured interviews aiming to investigate how people experienced and related to the use of photographic images within the intervention. \n\nParticipants will be recruited from the pool of service users who attended the group which took place in an adult, secondary care mental health service. Group participants will be asked to consent to a one-off interview regarding their experience of using photographs in this setting. The group facilitator will also be asked to attend an interview where we will gather their perspective on how photographs were used within the group and whether there were any perceived benefits or problems within this. \n\nAdditional consent will be sought for the analysis of photographs taken for the group, and for some examples of these to be used in the write-up of this research. \n\nParticipant interviews will be analysed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, and the photographs will be used in a visual content analysis. This data will be used to expand current knowledge regarding the use of photographs within a therapeutic setting and consider how such techniques could be used within future research and practice.\n\nWe will also ask participants to allow the researcher to use the group evaluation form collected as standard by the service, as supplementary data to the project. \n\nThe study will run from June 2019 - October 2020, including data collection, analysis, write up, and submission to the University of Leeds as a thesis for the Clinical Psychology Doctoral programme. \n\n
