Research summary
The study aims to investigate the effectiveness of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) in an outpatient eating disorders service for patients with bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. Service users who attend the South West London and St Georges Eating Disorder Service will be told about the study and will be given the opportunity to take part. Should they wish to do so, they will be assigned to the DBT group or to a wait-list control (treatment as usual). Those in the DBT group will be offered an individual assessment and a 20 week group programme. The effectiveness of this programme will be assessed by comparing questionnaire scores pre-treatment, post-treatment and at 6 months follow-up and by comparing scores for those receiving DBT with those in a wait-list control group. Those in the wait-list control group will receive treatment as usual (as the current waiting list time is around 10 months) and will have the opportunity to attend the next DBT group or to have individual CBT should they wish to. Service user satsifaction will also be sought through a client satisfaction questionnaire at the end of treatment.
