  • Research summary

The project is a collaboration between the Department of Computer Science at Edge Hill University and The Walton Centre NHS Trust which provides services for around 3m people. The Walton Centre Neurosurgery Department is one of the biggest in the UK and is unique in the fact that it is the only specialist hospital trust in the UK dedicated to providing comprehensive neurology, neurosurgery, spinal and pain management services.

This study aims to investigate a personalised approach to monitoring Epilepsy with the intention of improving the management of epilepsy patients and improve their daily lives. The investigation analyses this personalised approach to see if it is the “individual epilepsy patient” (and their individual profile) that makes the difference in which sensor based device to use.

The study will take place in the patient’s home setting. Using 2 different unobtrusive sensors; to measure heart rate and movement each individual epilepsy patient will wear a sensor over a period of time. They will be asked to continue recording their seizures in their diary. In order to investigate that the individual patient profile makes the difference in what device to use a number of queries will be performed.

The study will be recruiting 20 patients from The Walton Centre NHS Trust. 5 patients at a time will be wearing the sensors. Data will be collected from the sensors during a 5 day observation period. Those epilepsy patients that have a confirmed diagnosis that seizures are occurring frequently; so more than 2-3 per week will be recruited.
