Data collection arrangements
The DALIP Research Registry is a secure database of volunteers who have experience of acquired communication difficulties, such as problems with speech, language, or social communication following conditions like stroke or traumatic brain injury. The aim of the registry is to help people with communication difficulties, as well as carers, family members and professionals, to take part in research, stay informed about new studies, and contribute to shaping future research.
The registry stores the minimum information needed to match members to suitable research studies. This includes name, contact details, age, type of communication difficulty, relevant medical history (where appropriate), and preferences about the types of research they would like to hear about.
Information is collected directly by a trained researcher, either in person or through secure videoconferencing, with appropriate communication support provided if needed.
All data are stored securely on password-protected university servers and managed in line with UK data protection regulations. Only authorised researchers at University College London and the University of Reading can access the registry, and solely for the purpose of recruiting to ethically approved research studies.
Research programme
The DALIP Research Registry supports a programme of research focused on improving assessment, treatment and long-term support for people with non-progressive acquired communication impairments, such as those following stroke or traumatic brain injury. This includes research into causes and treatment language, speech and social communication difficulties, as well as the impact of impairments on everyday life. The registry enables high-quality studies led by researchers at University College London and the University of Reading. These studies may include behavioural research, development and testing of rehabilitation interventions, digital health approaches, and neuroscience studies using methods such as brain imaging or non-invasive brain stimulation. All studies using the registry must receive independent ethical approval before recruitment. Registry members are invited to take part in available research studies and are told about research findings through newsletters.
