Research summary
Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar that develops during pregnancy and usually disappears after giving birth [www.nhs.uk]. Women who have had gestational diabetes are nearly eight times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes in the future than women who have not been affected. Keeping a healthy lifestyle (specifically being physically active and eating a healthy diet) can reduce this risk but we know that many mothers find this difficult or do not know how. This can be due to many reasons such as prioritising their family above their own health and a lack of time, support and information. There are also many women who do not attend the recommended postpartum glucose testing, which helps diabetes to be identified and managed as soon as possible.
By conducting interviews, we aim to understand how best to help women to reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes through lifestyle changes and attending screening. Approaches that are suggested by women who have had gestational diabetes are most likely to be helpful to others. Other studies have identified what interventions are needed or have been helpful; we will explore how this could be work best for women in the UK. The results of these interviews will be used to inform the development of an intervention to improve diabetes risk after gestational diabetes.
We will recruit women who have had care for gestational diabetes from obstetric centres in East Anglia. Women who are deemed suitable by their healthcare provider (such as with successful pregnancy outcomes) will be able to take part, and we aim to recruit participants from different backgrounds to understand a range of views. Interviews are expected to last for 30-60 minutes and will take place at the time and setting of the interviewee's choice. The study will take place between March-December 2019.
